Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I’m Nicolas — solo indie dev and astronomy lover — and I’m super excited to finally share SunQuest with you! ☀️
I’ve built SunQuest completely solo with a lot of passion and too many coffees ☕️ The idea came to me 15 years ago, when I was looking for a place to live and wished I could visualize how the sun moved across the sky throughout the year. For a long time, I didn’t have the time to work on it — but recently, I finally got the chance to bring the idea to life.
Ever wondered where the sun will be? Now you’ll know ☀️
The sun is at the origin of life on Earth, and sunlight shapes our daily lives more than we often realize.
Thanks to SunQuest you can visualize the path of the sun, sunlight, and shade anywhere in the world, at any time of the year.
It’s great for real estate, photography, solar panel planning, outdoor projects… or just to find a cooler spot during summer 😅
Although it was first released 3 years ago, the app has evolved a lot recently — with features like exploring the sun’s path directly in Street View, solar panel output estimation, and a full 10-day weather forecast.
It now has over 100,000 users and a 4.8/5 rating on the App Store.
Available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac — with an Android version planned for later.
It’s come a long way — and now felt like the right time to share it with more people.
🧑💼 Who Is It For?
I’ve made SunQuest for both individuals and professionals. Whether you’re a photographer, architect, real estate agent, solar panel installer, landscaper, or simply looking for your dream home, SunQuest helps you accurately predict sunrise, sunset, and the sun’s path, optimizing natural light for all your projects.
Here are a few key use cases:
🌇 Urban use: Find a shaded spot in the city, enjoy lunch outdoors away from the heat — or check if that “sea-view terrace” really gets the sun.
🏡 Real estate: Check how much sun a property gets before buying or renting. Will the garden get afternoon sun in summer? Will the living room stay bright in winter?
📸 Photography: Plan your sessions with natural light — track the sun’s direction, altitude, golden hours and get a full weather forecast.
☀️ Solar energy: Estimate how much solar power a roof could produce (details below).
🌿 Landscaping & gardening: Place plants or trees based on sun/shade exposure.
🚘 Or just skip the hot car at the end of the day 😅
🔍 Key Features
You can simulate the sun’s path for any location and any date around the world.
I’ve designed SunQuest to be intuitive and easy to use — and to let you explore the sun’s position in different ways:
📱 Augmented Reality view to see the sun’s path in the real sky
🗺️ Map view with optional building shadows
🌍 Street View to preview sun orientation anywhere in the world
🧭 Compass view to explore sun directions throughout the day — from sunrise to sunset
I’ve recently added the following features:
☀️ Solar panel output simulation based on rooftop shape, orientation, shading, and local sunshine
🌤️ 10-day weather forecast, including hourly UV index
⚡️ Solar Panel Output Estimation (Powered by Google Solar API)
SunQuest estimates the solar energy production potential of hundreds of millions of rooftops across 40+ countries(US, Europe, Japan…). To do that, I’ve integrated data from Google’s Solar API, which combines local sunshine and weather information, roof orientation (pitch and azimuth), and surrounding obstacles such as trees and nearby buildings.
Useful for:
🏠 Homeowners estimating their roof’s solar potential to see if installing panels makes sense, or comparing offers more confidently
🧑🔧 Solar professionals generating remote estimates before site visits
