Kanbans within Kanbans, it’s Kanbanception! A recursive Kanban system — think Russian dolls, where every card in a board opens into another board automatically. Currently just validating the idea - would you be interested in something like this?

Hey everyone! I’m working on a project called Kanban Kanban — a recursive Kanban board where any card can open into its own Kanban (like Russian dolls for tasks and projects). It is probably easier to visualize by checking out the landing page at kanbankanban.com I’m still validating if this solves a real pain point though, so would love any feedback. The idea came from struggling with large tasks and tiny tasks sitting side by side on the same board, which then do not move for weeks. Really, these shouldn't be on the same "layer", and should instead be classified as a "project" (a collection of tasks). And then projects can be collected together as "goals". Like how Epics/Stories work in Jira. So the core idea behind Kanban Kanban is to bake this structure in from the start. Instead of handing you a blank canvas, we start with a Kanban board, and each new card added to it is a container for another layer of Kanban boards. This way you can go as deep or keep things as shallow as you like. Would Kanban Kanban be useful to you? Any obvious flaws? If validation goes well, I am also open to connecting with potential technical co-founders to help build this. Thanks!

Very fascinating idea. How many levels can Kanbans be nested? I'm assuming it's not infinite?

@jim_verducci Good question. Ideally, as many as you would like, although, I am not sure how useful that would be. Each board would essentially be a page/object (like in Notion or Obsidian), so I am thinking of having it based on storage limits (in terms of GB) rather than strict page/object limits. This may change however as we build.

@S+ This is one of the most instantly fun and somehow intuitive ideas for task management I have seen in a long time. It sounds silly but it might just work! And competitors might not easily copy it because it is so convolutedly unique in its data structure. I'm definitely on the waitlist.

I'm not completely sold on the sidebar design, I don't "get it". I somehow expect being able to click on a card to somehow "zoom" in a deeper level - but that's maybe too fancy 😆

@jakob_storjohann Thank you for your feedback! The idea with the sidebar would be to help with tracking what "layer" you are currently on, and quickly navigating to other pages/objects (each Kanban board would be its own page/object). Similar to how we have sidebars on Notion or Obsidian.

As for the zooming, if I understood you correctly, I think that could be achieved via page switching animations - will make a note!

@s_singh13 I get the notion sidebar idea, I'm just worried that per kanban there quickly might be like 35 tasks and there would be a lot of vertical jumping in the list length or truncated list. Maybe a breadcrumbs navigation on top and just a focus on easy playful back and forth zooming in and zooming out or even mini previews on hover (like https://linkz.ai/) would be enough for navigation.

The sidebar gives me "task management complexity vibes" and the core audience might be people "seeking simplicity and focus". It could of course stay and be collapsible/hidden but then topnav path breadcrumbs would still be crucial 😊

@jakob_storjohann Ah I see, the mini-previews could be nice actually. I see what you mean about the sidebar filling up. On the designs, I have included a kind of filter, sort and search buttons to make it more manageable. Each page also will have a +/- icon too to expand or minimise the pages within it, so that should also keep things clean. You will definitely be able to collapse the sidebar, and it does it look way cleaner and simpler when that is done in the designs. And you are right, having the breadcrumbs will be useful in every case - so will work that in too.

Thanks again for the feedback! Really appreciate it!
