Here’s the backstory of how this all started - because this product was actually not a product but an internal tool for myself. Back in 2019, I was on a winter holiday for Christmas (finally!) after almost 2 years without a real day off. Holidays are great to…think. To think about things during the busy week (or rather busy years), I couldn’t pause to ponder and see through. One such thing was my ability to express myself in English (painful!). I moved to the UK 4 years ago, and after I tiptoed living in SF for a while, I still wasn’t confident. My English wasn't all that great - and I could tell by the responses I got from people when talking with them. Sure, there are multiple components to this, correct grammar (or knowing where to put things and what makes sense and what doesn’t), order, exceptions, pronunciation, yadda yadda yadda. However, I’ve got all that covered already at that stage. My weakness was the number of words I knew to express myself. And to express what I wanted to say well and in a concise manner. To be able to explain stories and carry everyone with me instead of me explaining nonsense and not feeling the same connection with people. [detour 1, read below] I thought about how I would resolve this part of the issue. In the past, I studied English and learned a few words by reading and writing long lists of words and definitions. However, it felt tedious. The words had no context, and unless I were to use them straight away, I forgot them. The ones I used a few times and regurgitated the meaning I did remember. So spaced repetition and using those words in the correct context a few times would do the trick. Cool. I went online and searched for that - something that allowed me to add words I don't know while I read stuff online (as a proxy to increase my vocabulary), get the word on the page right where I’m reading it and get an email with a few of those each week to practice. … And I was in for a surprise. I thought there would be a few solutions to pick from, but alas, nope. Not a single one. At least not with what I wanted. I wanted the full package, not strap things together here and there to get the functionality. I wanted something cohesive. So being handy - I made one that fitted my needs and proceeded to use it exclusively for 1 entire year, where my vocabulary improved a lot. And from then shared it with people, and people found it interesting…and here we are. ⬅️ ➡️ [detour 1, below] To make my point clear, let’s take a short detour and then explain with examples. There have been plenty of studies on which subset of words you need to go about doing anything in English. A 100, a 1000 or anything in between. The funny bit is I… kind of disagree with that…because it’s not an absolute measurement. Can you go around walking to a destination? Yes. Can you explain a story and get the desired outcome? Absolutely not. Can you explain a situation clearly and get the desired outcome? Barely, if you’re lucky. Let’s see some examples: You say: “This weekend, I was hiking, and an animal came to me. I was scared.” The listener thinks: “He was hiking and got scared of an animal that approached him? Why? What?… Odd” Let’s add a bit of vocabulary to the above sentence, out of the “MINIMUM NUMBER OF WORDS” list to communicate (that being a 100, 1000 or anything in between) You say: “This weekend, I was hiking, and suddenly, an animal started chasing me, growling and groaning. I was scared.” The listener thinks: “Wow! What was that? Poor guy…are you okay? Did something happen? Can I help you?” A totally different image… And obviously a totally different response. (And also…would you… in your native language… describe what happened, like “the animal came to me” at all?. Not really.)
