Today we’re launching Messenger Lite, a new Messenger for Android app. Messenger Lite is a slimmed down version of Messenger that offers the core features of Messenger for markets with less reliable Internet connectivity and a prevalence of basic Android smartphones. With Messenger Lite, people are able to quickly and easily send text, photos and links to anyone using Messenger or Messenger Lite. Messenger Lite uses the same bolt logo as Messenger, but with colors reversed. The bolt is blue with a white chat bubble background.

@rssems @davidmarcus These are exciting news for users like me which use Messenger here in Cuba to chat and talk with our friends and family who live outside of the country. Excellent work

Maybe it just me. But I hate this "special solution for emerging markets". Instead of pushing to improve the infrastructure we get this half backed solutions.

@ekambos Facebook of all companies is also pushing in that area, bringing internet connectivity to underserved areas.

@ekambos These aren't half baked solutions– these are solutions that give people the ability to find family members, educate themselves, and communicate immediately in places that would otherwise take decades to build and match the infrastructure elsewhere.
Alain Ekambi
@aaronykng Not sure it would decades it there was a real interest in pushing things forward the right way.

@rrhoover Agreed. But to me they are not trying hard enough. Cant be that we always have to have this "special solutions" when on other part of the world people are talking about going to mars. Why is that that we need this "special solutions" in the first place ?
Feras Alnatsheh
@ekambos @rrhoover Companies tries to leverage the power of new phones in their apps to stay current. If you happen to have a low powered device you could use the lite version and if you have a powerful device you could use the regular version no matter where you are. Most apps just ignore low powered devices (understandably) where Facebook create a solution that custom tailored for these phones to run smoothly. it's not about trying harder, I think it's about phone hardware limitations.

Hi Riza. I'm from Nigeria, which I'm guessing is the type of country Messenger Lite is made for. Will Messenger Lite have bots featured on its platform? Chat is the gateway to the Internet for a lot of Africans so bots are going to have the potential to provide utility for a large number of people.
