We've been working on Clipman for 3 years and here are some lessons learned during that adventure.
We worked in an ad agency and when clients started asking for more and more videos, we decided to create a software that helps them create videos super fast.
Clipman started out very broad - Create videos from any website or text. With this approach we got like 3 paying customers in a couple of months, so obviously it didn't work and we had to refocus.
Then we stumbled upon e-commerce which is a crazy freaking huge market. We changed the UX, website copy, templates and almost everything else completely just for ecom and launched again.
We got 5000 users in a week by using affiliate marketing. So now we were onto something.
After this launch we finally had some interesting data to work with. We found out that people didn't want flashy videos, they want videos that work (make money).
So we built all our templates, timing, scene lengths and visuals after the best working video ads out there. Explosions and 3d animated trippy visuals are cool, but turns out simple videos that showcase the product clearly work best.
The second thing we discovered was that people didn't know why their ads weren't working.
They created couple of videos with Clipman, didn't make any sales and then said it's not working for them. So we asked them for their ad data to understand where the problem was.
