The best way to learn a language is via immersion. Travelling is not always an option, and chatting with natives online can be tricky: different timezones, keeping the conversation alive etc. TalkNative lets you chat with AI-powered natives whenever you want.

Hey, I'm Mehdi, maker of TalkNative. I've been learning Japanese for a few years now and I quickly understood that immersion with native speakers was key to progress effectively. I've been using the Tandem app to chat with natives and it was great at first, but my usage quickly went down to zero for several reasons: the timezone difference limited our chances to talk per day, we each have our own schedule (job etc.), you never really know when you should practice your language and when they should practice theirs, and finally I always had to make extra effort to keep the conversation alive. I was spending more time socializing than practicing, and when AI and LLMs became easy to access (thanks OpenAI), I started building the TalkNative app, to be able to actively practice with a native speaker whenever I wanted.

Good use case for consumer AI chat. Any plans to expand into verbal communication, @mehdi_gatbache, or does that not make sense?
Mehdi Gatbache
@rrhoover Hey Ryan, you're thinking live verbal conversation? Today the app lets you send voice messages, and get a voice message back (just like you would in any messaging app), but no live conversation. ChatGPT does it and I was super excited at first but then realized it's pretty stressful to have to reply on the spot, even more when you're not comfortable with the language. Also, I figured than new generations are much more comfortable sending a voice message whenever they want versus hop on a call ๐Ÿค”

@rrhoover @mehdi_gatbache ChatGPT's audio conversation is stressful when in any deep conversation. I'm wondering if you could improve it in your app just by allowing more lenience

@mehdi_gatbache ohh, got it! I thought it was only text.

@cruzcalvo audio in TalkNative is pretty different from chatGPT, itโ€™s closer to what you have in WhatsApp. In TalkNative you send a voice message, and the AI replies back in like 2-5 seconds with another voice message that can be listened to whenever you want and can be paused, and the AI doesnโ€™t expect an answer right away, you can reply even the next day

This is awesome way to practice output, great work. I really like the analysis feature. Would it be possible to include the full translation along with the line by line breakdowns? Also showing the level of proficiency for the language somewhere on the chat or being able to change it afterwards. How can we see/measure progression?
Mehdi Gatbache
@ahmadmahmood indeed a full translation would be useful! Interesting question on progression ๐Ÿค” Could be measured by the number of messages sent per week?
Ahmad Mahmood
@mehdi_gatbache thatโ€™s a good thought but I think focusing on quality (maybe number of vocabulary words used, complexity in grammar, or mistakes) vs quantity of messages might be a better indicator. I think you are on the right track and will find a way to measure this well
Mehdi Gatbache
@ahmadmahmood ok I see! Basically answering a question like: "I've been using the app for a few weeks, how much did I progress?" Very interesting, will work on this.
