I had positive experiences with Start-Playing overall, despite the hefty charges they put on GMs and players, until I had a 'hostile' review; a player did not communicate any issues within the games for me to resolve, or ask for a refund - they just left a negative review. I wanted to refund the player's two sessions in the campaign as long as the misleading review (as I can't do anything to change my GM skills/style if I don't get feedback in the session) was taken off - and Start-Playing, despite given extensive evidence on my part why this review was not fair, refused to take off the review. This is why I signed to their website and agree to the heavy costs; for issues such as this, I expect the website to support both GMs as well as players to leave amicably from campaigns if there is a disagreement. I can't bring back the time the player invested for the player, but I will pay them back for their sessions (and Start-Playing for any costs involved for them) if the review is taken off. I feel like this is the best thing I can do to resolve the situation for everyone, and I am unable to do so. I truly believe this is not fair. Also, on their website, there is no way to comment on reviews from players to give a response so potential customers can assess the reviews - as such, I have to give the website a 1 star review until the hostile review is removed, or Start-Playing allow GMs to comment to negative reviews on their own page like Trustpilot.

This site was a big help in getting my start as a professional Dungeon Master. It connected me to a lovely community of players and taught me a lot about what my audience is looking for. They're also always looking to improve the service with well thought out initiatives aimed towards making the experience easier for DMs and players.

Hi all! I’m Devon, one of the co-founders of StartPlaying. I've been a professional Dungeon Master for over five years. I was even featured in Bloomberg about it. Over time, people all over the country began to ask me to help run games for them, and, frankly, I could not handle the demand. When I did the research to try and refer players, I found that there was no real place to hire professional DMs to run games for people. That is why we built StartPlaying.Games - to solve a problem I personally saw. We have a large crew Game Masters who are running 100+ games a week. Anyone can join a game solo with others. You can book a game for you and a group of friends and family. We also offer the best team building events for our corporate customers! For those who don’t want to search through our site, we also offer a matchmaking service where we ask you a few questions, find your perfect Game Master, and then handle everything else. On the business side, we make money by taking a percentage of game bookings, including on a newly launched subscription option for players. Game Masters have been really excited about our platform, as it gives them more time to focus on planning and running games rather than building a website and business platform. Our players love us because they’re getting an amazing gaming experience without the hassle of setting it up themselves. Best of all, we're proud to boast our diverse user group that includes players of all kinds, including a group of 5th-graders who play every week, their mom and her friends who now do the same, and dads who don’t have time to be DMs and spend a night once a month playing together -- people who have never met each other forming friendships over adventures. I use startplaying daily as a Professional Dungeon Master I have I find this is a wonderful tool. I can list my open games, or create listings for potential groups. It really has been a huge time saver and networking tool.

I used StartPlaying with a couple different DMs, 1 with a group of friends and another just me and 1 friend and both have been awesome. One has turned into a frequent gathering when we all have time and the other had turned into to a full fledge campaign. DMs and site staff are super chill and friendly and I've net some awesome players along with. Would definitely give it a try!
