What do you think? …

Jake Cohn
Hey Product Hunt - quick briefer on why I created Sense. Long story short, I started Sense because I increasingly became concerned with how Netflix was handling the recommendation portion of their product. I wanted to make recommendations more human and ultimately more personal. I saw an ever-consuming reliance on data and computers that strayed away from what recommendations should be about. We're also focused on making movie recommendations a great experience, for a change. We want you to have to do the least amount of work while still getting picks that are a lot more relevant than what you're used to. We've put in well over 1000 hours of curation to make sure we give you the best picks. Over 85% of our users say that their picks are either 'spot-on' or 'good'. Just getting going.

Great idea! Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer looks up movie showtimes on the phone :)

Jake, I really enjoyed using the service. How do you manage to recommend movies I didn't hear of? Do you intentionally recommend movies that weren't so popular?
Jake Cohn
@rui Glad to hear that you enjoyed! There are a few things... The first is that there are actually a ton of movies on Netflix that would really work well for most people, but they never surface in the sea of titles that they constantly show you. So unless you search for the name of the title you'd never know it's there. We've scoured through the catalogue in order to find these. To your second question, not necessarily. We recommend popular movies. But, we've designed our picks so that we don't give you something completely obvious or something that you've probably already watched. So if you tell us you liked Kill Bill we aren't going to recommend Kill Bill 2 or Django Unchained. We feel that that would likely be wasting your time because you'd have to come back and say 'I've already seen it...what else?'
