Oftentimes after we give advice, they need help on the implementation, so we started building a rolodex of trusted agency partners for various activities. Rather than keep that to ourselves (it literally sits in Asana) we thought we'd share it with the world. This is just v1, we will look to expand filterability and features of this directory in the future. How do we vet agencies? Many of these agencies are friends, colleagues, and partners of ours that we've worked with or nearby over the years. We typically vet them by looking at their past work, making sure they have some form of establishment, typically older than a year with at least 1-3 recognizable clients. And we also ensure that they talk about Ecommerce and know how to serve merchants, not just generic SMB or SaaS, etc. If they fit these criteria, we list them. Note: We can't ensure every agency will work for you every time. Every merchant has a "bad agency story" after all. Choose at your own risk. When should I hire an agency? I often see entrepreneurs and small Ecommerce teams getting far too eager to outsource something like ads, content, or even dev work. Most of the time an agency is "fuel on the fire." And most importantly, you always need money to buy the fuel. It's on you to budget in the cost and expected timeline to return on investment from your agency. While most of the good agency owners will turn you down if they don't think they can help, there are many bad actors out there that will be like "yeah sure, I can do that for $5k." They will give you what you're asking for, but you shouldn't have asked for it, and now you've got a 1 page website with no traffic, no prospects of making money, and you really could use that $5k back... Secondly, the less you know on a topic, the harder it will be to find a successful agency partner. It helps to know something about page speed load time before hiring an SEO agency. It helps to know if Facebook ads are already profitable in your business before hiring a media agency. It helps to know that you can use a drag and drop builder to update webpages before you bring in the web dev team for a rebrand. Etc. Etc. Long story short: 50%+ of "bad agency" stories are because the merchant shouldn't have hired the agency, or they dropped the ball on their end. Please prepare for your needs and really think through how to work with a partner to drive your business forward.
