@scottwyden glad you appreciate it! Although it was developed specifically for our users (who were the ones that brought Sniply to our attention) we just didn't feel right locking it away behind a pay wall. After all, Sniply and apps like it don't keep their ability to do this behind a paywall-- why should we? lol
We basically rage-built this plugin after a conversation erupted about apps like Sniply and Start A Fire which allow people to place their own ads, calls-to-action and affiliate links over other people's content without their permission. Come into my yard and stick your sign without me knowing about it? Uh-uh... no sir! This free WordPress plugin is making its official debut in the repository for all to download. Let's put an end to content hijackers!
@dustinwstout Love that you folks built this plugin. Cool of you to offer it for free as well! I've been using this built into Social Warfare for a long time now, works like a dream.
@edleake thanks so much! We're doing our best to get the word out-- many people are still unaware that these types of apps (like Sniply) even exist, let alone the idea that they can be placing affiliate links inside these unsolicited CTAs.
@dustinwstout I have associates and colleagues who use these products when sharing links, I've been completely honest with them how I feel. I simple don't like them.
Needless to say I jumped on to our WP tonight and added your plugin. Thank you.
@dustinwstout@edleake I can't wrap my head around supporting this app. Good content marketing isn't content highjacking. It's a symbiotic relationship. Prohibiting users from **sharing your content** with their own CTA only hurts you, the content creator.
Simply put, if you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. Create outstanding content related to my field of business and I will share it until my mouse bleeds. However, I'm not going to advertise *your* content on *my* platform for free, am I? That's simply a waste of my time.
Although, if you let me overlay a CTA on your site, I'll be sure to target my sharing to send you more organic traffic that increases your conversions, I'll tip my hat to you with an attribution, and I'll even set my CTA to open in a new window so that the user doesn't lose your page.
You can block marketers from placing CTAs over your content, and they'll gladly take your business elsewhere.
@_jason_michael@dustinwstout@edleake Great points, Jason. I would add that when someone uses a service to add their CTA to your URL that they share, this is not highjacking, since it affects only their social shares of your content.
See, if I am sharing your blog, with your ads, your sponsors, splash page, newsletter signup popup, the pesky second popup that opens a minute later, as I'm reading (or, trying to), again asking me to enter into your CRM database... you are eating off my plate. I am fine with that, but if you turn around and add code to your site that blocks iFrames (e.g. blocks CTAs), then I stop sharing your blog.
