Hey everyone! After nearly a year of building Cap.so, we’re thrilled to unveil our latest relaunch and show you everything we’ve been working on. We've rebuilt the entire app from the ground up, focusing on what matters most: making screen recording and sharing as effortless and powerful as possible.
Back in April, we introduced the first early version of Cap, and the response blew us away. We gained thousands of users, hit #1 on Hacker News (Show HN), and trended on GitHub with over 5k stars. Most importantly, we received incredible feedback that’s shaped the new direction we’re excited to share today.
What’s new in Cap?
Cap is now local-first and packed with powerful new features, including:
• 🚀 A powerful editor
• 📸 Screenshots
• ⌨️ Hotkeys
• 🎯 Quick action thumbnails
• 🌐 Team sharing capabilities
• 💻 Windows early access release
…and so much more.
But the star of this release, v0.3.1, is our biggest feature yet: Cap Apps.
These are community-submitted apps that extend Cap’s functionality in exciting ways. The first app launching today is S3 Config, which lets you connect your own S3 bucket. With this, all new shareable links are stored and served directly from your bucket, giving you 100% ownership of your data.
We can’t wait to hear what you think! Please share your feedback—it means the world to us. Thank you for your incredible support 🙏
@mishra_mayank Hey, thank you! First off, we’re open source and community focused. Our roadmap is actively driven by ongoing user feedback. Feature wise, we’re local first, meaning all recordings by default don’t leave your device (unless you choose to create a shareable link). We also now offer custom S3 bucket storage support, meaning you can maintain 100% ownership over your uploaded shareable link recordings!
Congrats Richie on the launch. So much happened in this rebuild!
Really looking forward using it with my own S3 bucket.
Open source is all about choice and this is super epic 🚀
Downloaded it as an alternative to Loom as I liked the rounded square camera.
- Crashed 4 times when I pressed record, on a new macbook pro.
- Then when it did finally record, the camera didn't overlay on top when I swiped/switched between apps in fullscreen.
- Then when I finally got it to work, despite it being in rounded-square camera view, the video rendered and my camera was a circle, not the rounded-square view. Tried multiple times and same result, how is it recording a circle-view camera that isn't even displayed on my screen at time of recording?
Regardless, back to Loom I go. Utter waste of time.
hey Sam! We're in early beta - would love for you to have sent this feedback to us so we could address the bugs and get a fix out. Would have happily given you a free year of Cap Pro as a thank you. We ship new updates multiple times a day and love working with our users to fix things. We're a small team of 4, up against a billion $ corporation.
Cap is a local first recorder. By default, unlike Loom, we record your screen and webcam separate so you can go into our powerful editor and adjust things like webcam styling, backgrounds, gradients, padding, rounded corners etc. Lots of easy fixes/quick wins etc.
