Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I’m a Co-Founder at Bristle (www.bristlehealth.com) and we’re so excited to launch on Product Hunt Today! Thank you @mwseibel for hunting us. Problem 🤕 Cavities and gum disease are the most prevalent oral diseases on the planet, despite being preventable and reversible. Why? Dental care is inconvenient, expensive, and ineffective. Current tools (like X-rays) detect the symptoms of disease, like tooth decay and bleeding gums, instead of the root causes. By the time many oral diseases (like cavities and gum disease) are detected, they’ve already become serious issues that require the invasive, painful procedures we’re all used to - i.e. cavity fillings and root canals. The standard of care revolves around reactively treating disease instead of proactively managing health. But oral disease doesn’t stop in the mouth. Research has shown that the microbes that cause oral disease are also tied to risk of systemic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s (we’ve included a few links to recent publications at the bottom). Solution 🦷🧬 Bristle is developing an at-home oral health check-up. We will analyze the microbes in your saliva (your oral microbiome) to understand your risk for cavities and gum disease, then provide preventive treatments to avoid unnecessary dental visits and painful procedures. By measuring the harmful bacteria directly, we can catch disease at the earliest stages and connect our users with treatments designed to work best for them. Early Access 🚀 Today we are excited to launch our early access wellness report. This report will provide you a detailed breakdown of the bacteria residing in your mouth and their relation to a variety of health factors like cavities & gum disease. We would appreciate any feedback and questions you have, so please leave us a comment or chat with us on our site! 😊 Brian brian@bristlehealth.com The Economist, “Microbial ecosystems in the mouth and gut are linked to many ills”: https://www.economist.com/scienc... More of a general question, but I couldn’t quite understand this after reading through the privacy policy – what happens to the DNA data that comes from a sample that’s sent to you? Is it stored, or is it it destroyed after insights for a microbiome report have been created? Presumably US only for now? Quite curious about Bristle, but it’d be useful to see some indication of supported countries
Brian Maurer
@iamsebj Thanks for your question! During our analysis we selectively remove your DNA, leaving us with just the microbial DNA which we store in a deidentified manner, so it can’t be traced back to you. We can’t guarantee complete removal of your human DNA, but it will be at a low enough level that we cannot derive a meaningful signal from your genetic data, only from your microbiome. We plan to use the stored microbiome data to make new discoveries about the oral microbiome to improve health. Yes, only in the US for now (apologies if that was unclear), but hoping to expand eventually!

@brian_maurer Brilliant, that’s good to know – thanks!

What an awesome idea! Especially in Rona times, when you can't really set up any visit to a dentist (well, you can, but it will cost you more money and a lot of stress). I can't wait to see it grow.

@wekh Thanks so much Cezary! Let us know if you have any questions 😊
