Hey all - I'm excited to soft re-launch a project I've been working on supporting a long time founder in the kids education space. As a parent myself, I felt lost finding content online that didn't make me feel terrible every time I put it in front of my son. There's a lot of junk on YouTube and most streaming services are designed for adults. I kept asking parents for suggestions and would get a wide variety of opinions, each for their own specific reason - one was good for science, others good for teaching diversity. I met Amy, the founder of Beanstalk, who was struggling with the same thing. Her first solution was to produce a new type of interactive kid's content, which worked very well during the pandemic. The idea was kids would join via Zoom and be a part of a TV show, rather than sit back and zone out in front of a screen. They also repurposed the IP into offline shows, which are still up on YouTube today. As we know, the world is going back to the way things were, and the idea of making "more content" in a crowded marketplace overall wasn't resonating with parents. There's a lot of content out there as it is, and it is pretty hard to produce new stuff. The live shows were a fun novelty, but parents wanted their kids interacting with others outside of a screen. Still, screen time is inevitable. Most parents depend on screen time for a little break in the day, to get chores done or similar. The real opportunity, we realized, was there wasn't a single, aggregated place that parents to navigate all of that content to fill those little gap moments. Many parents were asking for any tips on finding shows to watch or toys that weren't junk on Reddit, Twitter, etc. Beanstalk is an expertly curated catalog of streaming tv and great products for kids (ages 0 - 10). We have some advisors and educational professionals on our staff who we've worked with to provide signal in the noise of 1000s of hours of things to watch. For certain shows, we have picked specific episodes based on the content that we think kids and parents will love. If you are a parent, you can join the community (a Facebook group) and provide new suggestions to add to the catalog as well. For parents that want to save time, there's a couple of offerings that will keep expanding over time: 1) a Youtube playlist of the best content on the Beanstalk account and 2) "Bundles", which is a collection of shows and products around a theme. The team started with a Thanksgiving bundle and will keep going from there. On a personal note, this has been nights and weekends side hustle that speaks to a personal need I and many parents have. We have many ideas on where to take it but some of the parents who lurk PH might have some good ones too. On behalf of the team I'm also looking for a decent Webflow developer to help add some functionality to the app, like allowing accounts and custom curation of content based on their interests. Point me to someone if you think they'd be a good fit. Thanks!
