Hi Hunters! I’m Anton Eremin, Head of Product at Practicum by Yandex. Special thanks to Chris who agreed to hunt us today. We really appreciate it! The edtech market has evolved dramatically over the last few years. These changes have only intensified in recent months due to the impact of COVID-19. Many people with “traditional” jobs have suddenly found themselves unemployed and searching for new careers. Meanwhile, the tech sector is still having trouble finding skilled professionals to fill vacancies. Let’s jump back to 2018. The problems in tech were pretty much the same as they are now. Amid rapid growth in emerging technologies, the kinds of jobs that needed to be done were changing, as were the skills needed to do them. As Russia’s biggest tech company, Yandex was not immune to these difficulties. So, to address the issue, we conducted internal research to find out what kind of professionals the market needed and how we could solve this problem. The result was the February 2019 launch of Practicum, a fully supportive online bootcamp designed to help self-driven individuals land the tech jobs of their dreams 💎 Since then, 70% of our job-seeking graduates have been hired. We believe we can replicate our success on a global scale. That’s why we’re here ✨ What makes us different ✅Students get a free 20-hour intro course packed with accessible and practice-oriented learning based on our convenient interactive platform. Before investing their time and money in a program, students are able to evaluate whether or not it’s the career for them. ✅ Students receive 24/7 community support from code reviewers, tutors who work in tech, and their peers. Students learn how to embrace feedback, how to work as a team, and how to overcome obstacles. ✅ Students develop portfolios of up to 15 projects, each modeled on real-life tasks often assigned to junior-level specialists. ✅ Each program costs between $3000 to $5000. Our team is fully digital and remote, which has helped us make Practicum affordable for everyone. The use of an interactive platform allowed us to save on costs typically associated with traditional lectures. Around 50% of the learning process is conducted within this interactive platform. There are no hidden fees, no loans, and no admission interviews. Students can currently choose from three tracks: Web Developer, Data Analyst, and Data Scientist. Additionally, a design track is being launched next month. Each program is between six and ten months in length. Please give Practicum a try and start your intro course today. I’m very excited to hear what you have to say about it 😉 Remember, our intro courses are completely free of charge.

Tried it, love it! :)

The curriculum seems extensive and the cost seems reasonable to me, but how are you guys different from all the other other ed-tech companies?
Shashkova Natalia
@james_ryan5 Yes sure! We do everything we can to help you succeed in tech and get hired. That's why we pay a lot of attention to the projects you build during the program. Your work will be reviewed up to four times in each sprint and you'll get a chance to fine-tune your project based on feedback from professionals. Not only will this help you hone your hard skills, but you'll also develop the soft skills required for working in any environment. Dealing with feedback, finding a solution, and working in a team are some of the essential skills you'll gain while building a portfolio that stands out to employers. Since we are completely remote, we also managed to maintain an affordable price.
James Ryan
@shashkova_natalia sounds fantastic. There's definitely more to being a programmer than just coding! Best of luck!
Anastasia Alikimovich
So glad to see your product on the market! Hope, one day I'll start learning Data Analysis with you, guys 💪🏻
Shashkova Natalia
@anastasia_alikimovich Thank you for your kind words! <3
Mike Mironov
Great to see Yandex on PH! What about support after the courses? Do you facilitate hiring somehow?
Shashkova Natalia
@mish_mir thank for your question! During your time at Practicum, you'll work in teams, improve your soft skills, and get career coaching to help you land a job. Our career acceleration track is included in the price of the program. In it, you'll learn how to write a CV, design your portfolio, choose companies to apply for, and network with other people in the industry. We also support our graduates during their probation period in the new role. Finding a job isn't easy, but we'll make it as easy as we possibly can for you.

Hey! How is this compared to other bootcamps, such as Ironhack, Lewagon, Thinkful, which are all about 10X more expensive?
Andrew Urodov
Hey @danirogerc 👋 In short Lewagon and Ironhack are famous for teaching offline (Ironhack has just launched remote programs, but they are relatively short). Thinkful is closer to 1:1 online mentorship, that's why they might be more expensive. Our students study online in batches supported by a tutor, code-reviewers and community managers. We were aiming to create an affordable platform for e-Learning at Practicum. That's why we've combined most of bootcamp perks and built an interactive simulator, where the half of your studies will take place. You'll complete small tasks to learn the programming concepts we introduce, and move on to building projects on your computer. We have a great team of code-reviewers willing to go through every line of your code or every piece of your design to give feedback and help you to improve your work. We also have live webinars, dev weeks when you work on group projects, plus you can take part in career coaching, because we do want you to succeed in landing a new job. Hope that answers your question 🙌
Natasha Isaeva
Good to see you here, guys! Question. How do you choose your tutors \ mentors? What background should a person have to become one?
Andrew Urodov
Hey @natasha_isaeva 👋We only hire those tutors who have at least 3 years of experience in the field and work as full-time developers. It's set up this way, so tutors know current programming trends and have enough soft-skills to give helpful advice without too much hand holding. We also have a training program for tutors to make sure they know how to help students learn more efficiently.
Natasha Isaeva
@andrewu thanks! Can't wait to see and get started with your UI\UX block ;)
Dima Dewinn
Not another “sounds good to me”, hah! Great work you all.
Nicholas Snyder
I think one of the most important things in a course is support, so I'm glad that you're paying close attention to this.
Linda Kovacs
I guess the problem on courses like this is that it's easy to teach people about if statements or classes, but 90% of development happens only when working on real projects. It's great that you mention the practical aspect of education a lot, but what kind of practice do students get during the program in order to solidify their abstract knowledge?
Shashkova Natalia
@linda_kovacs agree, most of the projects you build at Practicum are designed to resemble the kind of things you'd work on in real life. In the second part of the program, we'll connect you with our partners who need help, let's say, in Web Development. You'll be able to work in teams and get feedback from them.
David C
@linda_kovacs I am taking the course right now, and one of the coolest thing about the course is that you get feedback on everything from real devs. And they really kick your butt. I only knew a little JS syntax when starting out, and those CodeReviews are brutal, but everytime I end up with nuggest of gold from experienced developers. It really is one of the best selling points of the course imo.
Anna Holmquist
I think online educational platforms are something natural for tech giants who have been accumulating expertise for years. I'm surprised that Facebook or Google don't have their own projects like this.
Shashkova Natalia
@anna_holmquist exactly! we hope to show them a good example.
Ofir Ezrielev
Do we even need programmers now?
Shashkova Natalia
@ofir Nice one, Ofir! Check out Cyberstates or other resources to see for yourself that the number of tech jobs is on the rise. Of course, there's always a rumor that some programming jobs will be replaced by robots in the near future. But guess what, somebody will have to create those robots. Also, it's much easier to transfer from one programming field to another than to start from scratch.
Marites Milner
Why is the price so low? And how will you provide bootcamp quality for this price?
Shashkova Natalia
@marites_reales_milner First of all, bootcamps are overpriced.) Secondly, we wanted to create an affordable platform for e-Learning. That's why we've built an interactive platform, where the majority of your studies will take place. You'll complete small tasks to learn the programming concepts we introduce. You can ask for help if you get stuck, but most of the time it's quite intuitive, so you won't need much guidance. Our team is distributed, with members based all over the world. So, when it comes to code reviews or support, we can hire the best talent for less than the US market can offer.
Alexey Tazov
Why is it called a bootcamp? Isn’t it more like an intensive course?
Shashkova Natalia
@alexey_tazov Well the first associations that arise with the Bootcamp are a sports or military training camp. We chose this definition because we expect our students to work hard throughout the course of the program. It's not something you can do casually in your spare time. Students will have to be proactive to meet deadlines, work on projects that might seem intense, and build up their portfolio. Programming is a super competitive field, and so to be perfectly honest with you, when it comes to job interviews, the things that matter most are how hard you've pushed yourself and how much practice you've gained. I hope this sheds some light on our choices.)
Anton Eremin
@alexey_tazov it's down to the audience perceptions, really. Many folks didn't get how intensive the course was, before they heard 'bootcamp'. Then people's expectations got much closer to reality.
Jake
What exactly is included in the price? $1,000 for a 10-month program with tutor support looks really affordable.
Shashkova Natalia
@jake3 You're right, our goal is to make our programs as accessible as possible while providing as much help as we can. For this price, you'll get 24/7 learning support on the interactive platform, code reviews from professional developers, and communication with a tutor. 👨‍🎓 Our platform helps to provide a fully immersive learning experience that anyone can enjoy remotely, which helps us to cut costs while maintaining quality.
Adel Shadrina
So cool there're free courses which help to understand whether profession fits me or not. Thanks for that.
Shashkova Natalia
@adel_shadrina Yes! You got the idea!
Tatsiana Kavalchuk
Wooooow! Way to go!
Steve Stivason
Practicum offers a great solution to learning modern web development practices! Currently working with educational technologies, I wanted to dive into formal training to help advance programming skills that, for the most part, started with informal learning practices such as YouTube videos, blogs, and online tutorials. Practicum's online platform is impressive, user friendly, and guides you through relevant learning objectives by providing real-world scenarios, relatable examples, and instant feedback that prepares you for projects that get graded by experts. While I'm only a couple of months into the Practicum curricula, I'm really happy with the services they provide and the additional webinars they've offered to further enhance the learning experience. I highly recommend this program!
Mabel Hernandez
You mention that students develop a portfolio of up to 15 projects. Can you give an example of what some of those projects are?
Shashkova Natalia
@mabel_h This really depends on the program you choose. For example, in the Web Development program, you start with a landing page and learn to turn a complex design spec into code, then you create a web app using JavaScript. Eventually, you'll start working with React, and then you'll learn the basics of back-end development to help you with your final project. You can read more about each program on our website. We also have additional team projects where you build something useful with your classmates, such as a landing page for an NGO.
Danny Garcia
As a current student (Data Analytics course) and nontraditional student (psychology major), I can attest to the strength of the curriculum and learning approach of this program. Thank you Yandex for empowering me with a more nuanced understanding of the data analytics field as well as elevating my programming and analytical thinking skills. And congrats on the launch!
Andrew Urodov
@danny_garcia1 Thanks, Danny! Happy to hear you’re enjoying the Data Analysis course. We'll try to do our best to guide you on this way and help to find a career change you're looking for.
