Hi! I'm a software engineer and TTRPG DM/player. When I'm DMing, the hardest thing for me is to quickly come up with names, backstories, quick events, etc. So I used my engineering skills and made a solution for me! Maybe it will help you out too?
I made RPGen, an app that has quick and virtually unlimited content. What's this NPC's name? What inventory does a shop have? Why didn't I plan a magical weapon to give to my players? What the heck is going to happen when my players camp in the forest?! I wanted to create a tool that lets me get back into the game as quickly as possible, without googling for tables or fussing around with my papers and documents.
The current list of generators includes:
- Normal names (Dwarf, Elf, Human, Half-elf, Halfling, Half-orc, Tiefling)
- Unusual names (Dragonborn, Gnome, Kenku, Murloc, Aasimar, Orc)
- Full NPC backgrounds, complete with age, profession, reputation, and personality
- Location names and descriptions (Large, small, Dwarvish/Elvish, Landmarks, Buildings)
- Shop names, owners, and inventory of various disciplines
- Food (drinks, meals, desserts) and items (weapons, armor, jewelry, magical weapons, magical armor, magical jewelry, mundane items, book titles, heraldry)
- Story elements (rumours, bounties, diseases, command words)
- Events (at sea, desert, town, forest)
- NPC inventories
- A variety of Utilities (robust dice roller, ability stats, coin conversion, tarot cards)
The app is free to download now, on iOS and Android. If you have anything else you want to see added, PLEASE PM me, send me an email, or tweet me!! I would love to keep adding useful content.
@lyzzibrooks Hi Lyzzi, what a great idea! Love the idea of using apps to improve the experience of a traditional table-top game. I really like the UI behind the types of dice to roll, as well. It feels like there's been a lot of love put into this idea and it pays off.
This is amazing! (I'm a big D&D nerd) Maybe this is finally a replacement for 'fantasynamegenerators.com'. Great idea to include story ideas as well, can imagine running into an improv situation as a DM and just quickly generating a story idea on the fly.
@chrisashby Thank you so much! fantasynamegenerators is really great and was honestly a source of inspiration from me (and she has so many other fandoms that I will never be able to replicate), but a lot of the generators I made came out of frustration at the seemingly not-as-random as I'd like, i.e. getting a lot of duplicates. I tried my best to avoid that 😊 Thank you again!
