Good to see Pastebot's return. But it needs an iOS version to be truly great. There's a whole bunch of Clipboard apps that do the job. Some are brilliant, some are adequate, some are gorgeous and goodlooking and some are functional. Curious to see what Pastebot will add.
@t55 until we can have apps running continuously in the background on iOS, the experience for this kind of app there is never going to be great. We copy/paste far more often on Mac and so that's where we focused our energies. Pastebot 1 was an iOS app with a small Mac component. Pastebot 2 is a full fledge Mac app which should eventually have an iOS component.
@tapbot_paul@t55 the 'widget' approach by copied on iOS is definitely a 90% good enough solution at the moment. Would love to see something similar with Pastebot.
@t55 Yes, for me syncing with iOS is the most important part of a clipboard tool, I currently use CloudClip for this. HOWEVER keep in mind that iOS10/MacOsSierra will be out this week and supports the native iOS/Mac clipboard syncing - that will make the need for a companion iOS app mostly irrelevant.
@jeremydrysdale@tapbot_paul I kind of think its smart on TapBot's part. They can focus their energy on making the best Mac/iOS app there is without worrying how it will work on other platforms or compromising something that would benefit Apple users in order to make it work on other platforms.
Used Pastebot religiously when it first came out and it was that awesome bridge between desktop and mobile. That said, it's been years and the "walled -garden of Apple" is a tough sell.
I switched to Pushbullet awhile back. Platform agnostic. Doesn't depend on iCloud for sync and has a web interface too. #pushbullet
@mattproto Yeah I too use Pushbullet for this now and like you said it doesn't matter what platform you are on. I use it on windows, Mac, iPad and iPhone and its been great. Its much easier to use and more flexible than anything else I have found elsewhere. I like that it is more than just a clipboard. It really can be anything you want it to be. It is great when you are reading something on your computer and want to pick up on your phone, just push bullet the article over. Also you can send yourself notes, or use it as copy/paste manager. It just feels natural and easy to use.
@_jacurtis nothing against @tapbot_paul and Tapbots. Always do amazing products and experiences I love to use. I just can with the iOS only philosophy on this type of feature. I need it to be platform agnostic.
@coopeh try it and see, not like it costs you much other than a bit of time. You may like it better, you may not. I tend to prefer single purpose focused utilities but an all-in-one approach may work better for you.
Can you speak at all about the security features built into this app? Any time something it actively messing with my pasteboard I worry about 1Password entries or other sensitive information. If somebody was to somehow access my computer (leave it unlocked or something) they could easily look through my pasteboard history. Are you doing anything special to keep this data safe or locked?
@timonus we support this http://nspasteboard.org and also have a blacklist in settings. Stuff copied from 1Password and Keychain app will not get stored anywhere. If you did leave your computer unlocked sure someone could come and scroll through your history and see what you did, but passwords shouldn't be in there by default.
The filters feature changed my life. The whole damn thing is miraculous... I sound ridiculous but I'm serious, I didn't realize just how happy this little app would make me.
@hugojmd@jaymutzafi for me I do web dev and the list and img wrapping are going to be used often. The case filters are honestly available directly in the OS but it's nice to be able to apply them as you paste.
@hugojmd As a web dev, my biggest and most repeating issue is copying text that was created in all sorts of places, web form, MS Word, Google Docs, etc' and pasting it into a web page. It always comes with a variety pack of random/extra tags that mess things up and clutter the code. If I were to strip all formatting or convert to plain text, I would also lose all Bold, Italic, Bullet Points and Links and the have to go and reformat it manually which is a huge pain. Otherwise I'd have to strip the extra tags manually which is also a pain. With pastebot I super quickly make a filter to replace specific tags with nothing and most often those are the same as before depending on the source and it removes everything except the normal formatting that I want to keep. Even if I encounter a new tag/code I can add it in 5 seconds to an existing filter. This saves me so much cumulative anguish it is crazy. I was about to go as far as making my own program to do it and this came out just in time.
How is this going to compete with the built in clipboard continuity? Is the iOS app capable of automaically sharing to osx, or am I going to need to open up your app to sync my clipboard?
@garetmckinley two separate things, one synchronizes the current item on the pasteboard between multiple devices (if you can get it to work, which honestly I have not been able to despite having a dozen diff test devices) and the other keeps track of the last X items you copied and lets you paste them in whenever. We'll add sync capabilities, but at least on iOS for the current item we're never going to be able to match the exact behavior of continuity, unless Apple opens up their OS quite a bit more (which in now way will happen anytime soon).
@mattproto the ability to transform the text is a biggie for some. I don't have an issue getting raw data sync'd amongst my devices I need processing or transformation. YMMV
@arlogilbert one shouldn't interfere with the other. Unfortunately since it never seems to work right we haven't had a good chance to play with it and make sure.
Yay, Pastebot is back! But..oh, wait: for OS X? Hmm..hope it eventually makes it way to iOS where I find multiple ways to paste more helpful. My guess: it'll be a paid product on OS X first to fund development of a free iOS version.
@joshpuetz could go either way, but in general haven't been a fan of "free". Would work well as a cross platform bundle, but of course no real support for that.
@joshpuetz How does having one product whose only purpose is to fund another product make much long term sense? Free apps in the app store isn't really sustainable.
From my short time with the Pastebot for Mac beta it has some killer functionality like the ability to perform filters on pastes as well as sets of oft-used pasted snippets.
I agree with many of the comments here that it is a "must have". I've been using Tweetbot on MacOS and iOS since it was 1st launched plus Calcbot on my Mac. In my short time with Pastebot I've already deleted the other clipboard manager I had installed. Love it.
