Cool. Congrats to launching on PH. Reminded me of www.domainz.io have you seen this?
mightyalex
@spekulatius1984 Thanks Peter. Of course we know Rhys and http://domanz.io. We know your http://startupnamecheck.com (which is awesome 😊) too. We have also launched http://dockname.com and http://mono.name in the past.
Peter Thaleikis
@mightyalex ah cool. I sent your link to Rhys too haha. What's your long term plan for maker names?
mightyalex
@spekulatius1984 In short term we search domains and update daily. For future we have a list of planned features, for example a user created bucket of domains which can be shared and voted by teammates.

@mightyalex cool. Thats interesting. Keep shipping :)

Hi guys πŸ‘‹, πŸ“‹Maker Names is an open database of available domains. It helps makers find unique name for their project by searching for the right one or simply browsing the proposals and get inspired. We promise to be creative and helpful with finding original names for our supporters and users, but we can't guarantee on how much we add per day/week. πŸ•‘ Each domain is checked for availability on each 24 hours and the list is updated. πŸ™ You can become our supporter and get the benefit of being the first to see the latest available domains.

Wish this was available while I was squeezing my brain for domain names.
mightyalex
@oprearocks maybe next time, maybe this weekend you could put together some idea MVP πŸ‘Š
Adrian OPREA
@mightyalex I would, but I have so many ideas in the funnel, that already have domain names .. :D Either way, I'd like to congratulate you for your work!

Find a good name for a product can be a tricky task. There are a lot of startup name generators but it’s very rare when it sounds good. Maker Names solves this issue. Good work guys!
mightyalex
@yesnoornext Thanks Vincent. All domains are brainstormed, manually checked and added by Natasha. Btw we have an idea for menu bar app, that we may pitch to you and see what you think :)
Chris
Really cool idea and good execution. It should be very useful for people with tons of ideas a day
mightyalex
@airlabs_io Thanks Chris. We will provide couple of free domains per day for those people πŸ˜…

Searched for a bunch of generic keywords and nothing came up. Searching for something like code only brings up a few names and mainly brings up non-.com names. If the reason for this is being hand-curated I will tell you, it isn't scalable. Compared to something like Leandomainsearch.com/ this is pretty poor.
mightyalex
@doronvermaat Hey Doron, thanks for the feedback. I see you are not satisfied with what we offer, so let me try to maybe change your mind: We currently have around 480 domains and we don't cover every generic keyword. Sorry that we have not covered what you have searched, but we will offer on demand naming service in the future, so maybe you can be our first client. Everyone prefers .COMs and Natasha always tries to add more of them. You mentioned searching for "code" which actually brings 11 results from which: 6 available .COMs, 2 available .COs and 3 happily registered by our users. You are right about non-scalable, but in comparison to LeanDomainSearch which offers computer generated names and quantity we offer an actual person writing meaningful names and gives them away for free. I wouldn't say we are poor, but open and helping the community. We offer an exclusive preview (latest 20 domains) for our supporters who are willing to pay $1.99/m, which protects the domains to be snatched by domain resellers who later sell them on websites like yours.

@mightyalex I didn't mean to come across snappy but I do think there's not much-added value offered compared to other solutions in the market. It's beautifully designed with excellent UI but in the end, the value has to be in the quality of the presented domains. I don't consider most of the presented .com's on your site brandable domains. They don't pass the radio test, lots of misspellings etc. The harsh truth is that all the good domain names have been registered so instead of focusing on trying to find okay, or half-decent domain names that are available to hand-register you might want to consider sourcing pending delete lists and presenting a higher quality list of names that will soon come available and help founders backorder these names so they can be caught on the drop. If you decide to stick with readily available domain names I would use affiliate links (every registrar has an affiliate program) to monetize instead of a monthly fee. I hope this feedback is helpful and I wish you the best with the project.
mightyalex
@doronvermaat I will find out how we can list 'pending for deletion' domains. I think domainz.io lists these, @rhysbeingsocial? I have tried with affiliate links in the past (click Claim on https://mono.name) and ditched them now for good, because every registrar uses different (third-party) affiliate service e.g. cj.com which is clunky, dashboard doesn't work in Safari, it's tedious and not worth it in general. We now link all domains to @namedotcom. Thank you for your feedback, it is really helpful, it is why we have posted on PH in the first place. About the quality of domains, I'm sure we have some that are not that good, but I will list below some of our suggestions (110 in total) that users picked and registered. logaze.com botlands.com uijobs.co excode.com aweux.com codals.com codree.com factise.com hukomo.com mass.sale movindex.com startopa.com milkness.com chatonia.com outputo.com styledpixel.com focusbot.co watchamp.com

Selling ad space for $169.99 per year seems crazy to me. There's no real upside to doing that. If someone does buy out the ad space for an entire year then you are stuck having to show their ad for little to no money and for a really long time. If Google were to rank your site on the first page of a couple of keywords, you might find your ad rates shoot up in value but being stuck with having to show the year-long ad that someone bought. To get around this you could put a clause in the contract that allows you to refund/buy them out. That way if your site gets more traffic, you then aren't stuck with a low ad rate.
mightyalex
@benbowdene This constructive feedback is why we publish on Product Hunt. You know being an independent maker and doing the whole website from scratch, we can't figure out everything by ourselves. I've limited it now to only $19.99/m option which can be canceled by both parties, and we will consider better solution for the future.

Love this! Just subscribed to the monthly plan as I've been going mad thinking of a new name for @treeforthq (need to change for SEO/marketing.)
