If you can’t explain your product simply, it’s too complicated.

I keep seeing this type of aphorism, and while it sounds good—like most aphorisms do—how much value does it really have? How simple should a product actually be? I’d love to hear some thoughts.

I like this saying! Yes, there are lots of complicated things in the world, but if you think about what problem your product fixes, you can usually explain that part simply.

The hard part comes when you've been making something for so long, your head is full of all the small details and technical stuff. You know too much! It gets really hard to step back and see your product like a new person would.

That's what the phrase is talking about. If you try hard but still can't explain your product in a way my grandma would understand, maybe it's too complicated or trying to do too many things at once.

It's not about making simple products - it's about being able to tell a simple story about why your product matters!
