GPT's Creator - I’d love to hear your thoughts

I’ve been building a lot of custom GPTs for niche use cases lately, and every time I create one that’s actually useful… I run into the same problem: I can’t monetize it inside the GPT Store.

Right now:

  • All GPTs on the store are free

  • There’s no way to offer paid or private versions

  • No control over who uses them, or how often

So I started wondering:

What if there were a simple way to turn your GPT into a paid product,

without needing to code or build a full app around it?

🧪 I’m exploring an idea that might help solve this, but before anything, I’d love to hear from other builders.

🧠 A few quick questions:
1. Is this just my problem and the solution already exists... or is this something others are running into too?

2. Have you ever wanted to sell or restrict access to a GPT you built?

3. Would you use a platform where you could bring your own OpenAI/Claude/Gemini API key and start charging users instantly?

4. Does a no-fixed-cost, revenue-share-only model sound fair to you?

5. What’s been your biggest blocker when trying to monetize a GPT?

💬 I’d love to hear your experience, opinions, frustrations, or ideas.

If you're a GPT builder, you’re exactly the person I’m trying to understand better.

Thanks in advance, your feedback really matters 🙏

It will be great if there was a simple way to turn GPT into paid product. Currently we can restrict access in limited way using share option (Anyone with the link). I've built custom GPTs for my clients. Currently they use it internally as part of their service offering.

@sanoojs Yes, exactly, right now that’s the only option. But if the link gets shared, you lose control.

And with a monthly plan, someone could stop paying and still keep using the GPT via that URL.

If it’s just for one client, that’s fine.

But if you want to sell access to multiple users, it doesn’t really work.

Some people use “Team accounts”, but then every client needs to pay for the Team license (€30/month) plus your own fee… costs go up fast, and it gets messy.

That’s exactly why I’m thinking about a simpler solution.

Thanks for your input! :)

@sanoojs  @andrea_orru Well It can work. Check out the Notion Template Maker industry. It has the same mechanics. One template - one sharable link and People have made thousands of dollars by selling templates on Gumroad .

@sarthology Thanks for the insight! 😊 That model definitely has potential, the only thing is that with sharable links, it’s easy to lose control if they get passed around. Also, since GPTs can improve over time with user feedback, a monthly payment feels more aligned, kind of like a mini SaaS (for the creator) rather than a one-time product. 😊

Hi Andrea, thanks for raising this important topic! I definitely share your pain points—monetizing custom GPTs inside the current GPT Store feels very limited. The inability to offer paid or private versions and having no control over usage makes it tough to build sustainable products around these models.

To answer your questions:

1. This is not just your problem. Many builders I know want more flexible monetization options but haven’t found a good solution yet.

2. Yes, I’ve often wanted to restrict access or monetize GPTs I’ve built, especially when they serve niche or specialized needs.

3. A platform that lets you bring your own API key and start charging users directly sounds fantastic. It would empower creators without forcing them to build complex apps from scratch.

4. A no-fixed-cost, revenue-share-only model seems very fair, especially for indie developers or small teams.

5. My biggest blocker has been lack of built-in payment and access control functionality, forcing me to build external infrastructure or give away my work for free.

Overall, I’d love to see a streamlined platform that enables GPT creators to monetize easily and securely. Looking forward to hearing more as you develop this idea!
