How do you approach SEO for ChatGPT (AI) purposes?

I won't hide the fact that instead of entering key phrases into Google, I'm now redirected to the GPT Chat and asking complex questions.

Over the past year, ChatGPT has become the 5th most visited website in the world, and most recently, it also recommends products.

It is clear to me that people will want their brands to be included in ChatGPT responses.

👉 How do you approach SEO or techniques that will ensure that chatpgt mentions you?

(Has anybody started solving this?) Your POV is appreciated.

I'm still on the learning and experimenting side on this topic, but I have a friend who's been focused on making ChatGPT mention her company, and she documented everything here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-i-made-genai-search-tools-recognize-portxchange-source-sopco-aua5f/?trackingId=PGd94HybR1%2B645YjmrS%2FSQ%3D%3D

I do have a small win for Lifetoon, tho - yesterday GA4 showed us that we had the first person coming on lifetoon.me from ChatGPT, and I did do a small victory dance in my office :))

Great question—AI-first SEO is the next frontier. We're moving from keyword stuffing to building semantic authority. Clear, structured content + strong brand presence across trusted sources is key to showing up in AI answers.

@parth_ahir Completely agree. Especially with GPT's web search capability having media presence (PR, blogs, content) will be crucial.

Nika

@parth_ahir Do you think that actual websites and their blogs will receive less traffic? (personally, it is my reckon)

very relevant, thanks for creating the thread @busmark_w_nika

I think the informational websites will take the most hit as gpt aggregates them really well. However, for the products and services it will only generate more traffic. I think if you get into top of Google/Bing you will get in AI responses anyway at some time, so there is nothing specific you have to do probably.

Nika

@nikita_polovinkin Probably yes if OpenAI does not start charging money for appearances in texts.

Nikita Polovinkin

@busmark_w_nika I think that would be so hard for them to manage that and then It might also raise the distrust in OpenAI model responses in general

Thanks for raising this important question, Nika! As AI-powered tools like ChatGPT become primary sources for information, traditional SEO strategies need to evolve. Currently, ChatGPT’s responses are generated based on a mixture of licensed data, publicly available information, and training datasets, rather than live web indexing or traditional search rankings. This means optimizing solely for search engines might not guarantee direct mentions in AI-generated answers.

That said, some approaches to increase the likelihood of being referenced include:

1. Building authoritative, high-quality content that is widely cited and linked across reputable sites, as AI models learn from broadly recognized information.

2. Ensuring your brand and product data are well-represented on trusted platforms like Wikipedia, major review sites, and authoritative industry publications.

3. Structured data and schema markup on your website to clearly define your products and services, making it easier for AI systems to understand your offerings.

4. Engaging with AI platforms and APIs directly, as some companies are exploring partnerships or integrations to get their data featured.

5. Keeping an eye on emerging AI-specific optimization techniques as the technology and guidelines evolve.

While the landscape is still nascent, proactive content strategy combined with authoritative presence seems like the best path forward. Would love to hear if others are experimenting with new tactics as well!
