Boxy is the best Inbox by Gmail client for Mac, with a sleek and polished interace, and many native features like Push Notifications, Reader Mode and Markdown Support.
Insta-buy for me—I love Inbox and now it's like I have a native app for it. Brilliant work, folks. Only thing I'm not a fan of so far is the Compose button...the fact that the label overlaps the account switcher on hover seems messy. I'd rather it be a FAB like on the web or somewhere on the left side of the menu bar. Minor quibble but that's just not intuitively where I expect a compose button to be.
@linuz90 Fantastic, looking forward to your solution. Next question: is extension support on the roadmap? I'm considering adopting Mixmax so it would be great if I knew it would work with Boxy.
@linuz90 Also, on the topic of shortcuts: I'd personally rather have ⌘1, ⌘2, etc. switch between accounts rather than switching between Inbox, Snoozed, Done. Could that be an option?
@mostlymarius I've been using Mixmax since its launch and can't imagine Inbox without it anymore. This is the kind of integration that will make Boxy indispensable :-)
Hello Product Hunters!
I’m super excited to be here. Thanks so much @chrismessina for testing our app and hunting it!
I’m the designer of Boxy, and @frankdilo is the developer. Boxy is a feature-rich Mac client for Inbox by Gmail. We are wrapping the Inbox web interface in a native OS X app that supports notifications, default email client setting, common OS X keyboard shortcuts and multiple accounts.
We’ve been working for months to make it work and look great. Among are favorite features there are a Dark theme and a Reader mode (which we love using to read newsletter comfortably, without the distraction of the full interface).
We’re also pretty excited about our roadmap for future versions, and we’d love to hear what you think!
You can reach us on Twitter at @getboxy or via email at info@boxyapp.co
Cheers!

What a beautiful app! I have a quick question. I've noticed that you have "common OS X keyboard shortcuts", but do you have VIM shortcuts or do you plan to add them? It's probably my most favorite feature from Gmail, Sparrow, and Mailbox. Thanks!
@kacyf Thanks Kacy! Those would be a nice addiction, you're right. I'll put it on our list and I'll discuss it with @frankdilo to see what we can do :)
Been using a Fluid app with Inbox for months, ever since Mailbox became abandonware. Since I used Fabrizio's icon for my Fluid app, I was seriously anticipating this. It's lightyears ahead of using the browser version, and a total joy to use. I *really* wish it had full-screen/split-screen support, though; it's the only app on my Mac that doesn't, and it really mucks up my window organization. I'll also throw in my vote for a better compose button; I do think consistency with Inbox is important, and pretty much everything except the compose button is consistent with Google. It should definitely retain the large, circular plus button in the bottom corner. Another good reason to move its placement: right now it looks like an "add account" button, since it's next to the user's avatar.
I also noticed that some elements have rounded edges where they probably shouldn't, like the top of the search dropdown and bottom of composing a new email. The compose button also becomes obscured while searching. Just wanted to report!
I hope this remains well-maintained! Can't wait to see updates. :)
@goldenchaos Thanks so much Jason, much appreciated! We're going to implement split-screen and full-screen in the next version of the app, it's something we also care about. And we're also working on a separate compose window, that would make a huge difference. Also thank you for pointing out the other little details, be assured that I'll look into everything.
@jannis I was hesitant to buy, but I decided "what the heck, I'll just buy it". After an hour of use, I love it!
My only gripe is that the "Open in Gmail" button should probably be hijacked and open in a proper browser window rather inside the app itself. It gets alittle weird and it's hard to get back without right-click > Back, or closing the app and re-opening.
All in all, I love it!
@linuz90 my only gripe is slow account switching and the fact that notifications only work for the selected account. Kind of frustrating 😞 - any aims to change these?
Hello again everyone. THANKS for all the love and support, this means much for us. We're seriously amazed by everything that's happening.
I and @frankdilo wanted to take a moment to share with you what's happening. We received tons of emails with everything from bug reports, feature requests or questions of any kind. This already proved to be fundamental for Boxy's development.
We're about to send the very first Boxy update to Apple (asking for an expedite review) which will address many issues. For instance, we added a new experimental authentication system to login with external services like Google Apps for Business, Okta and OneLogin, and we made the app more reliable, especially when connectivity is low or unstable.
Following many indications to do so, we improved shortcuts support a lot: we implemented Cmd+Alt+1, 2, 3 for fast account switching, we fixed the horrendous error sounds for VIM shortcuts, Cmd + "," will open the Inbox preferences pane and Cmd+Enter will send emails more reliably.
We're can't wait to tell you more about our future plans. THANK YOU ALL again, especially to @chrismessina for his amazing support and advice, to @ow for trying the app and covering us on The Next Web on day one (without us asking to do so), and to our awesome beta testers. ❤
@mbalex99 we made a wrapper for Inbox, then we made a custom CSS that in the 1.0 version of Boxy has more than 200 custom rules. Then there's notifications, dock icon badge, menu bar icon, dark theme, mailto: links handling and other features that we think make this app much more than a "wrapper"
Love it! One thing is that spell-check doesn't seem to work for me.
This is pretty critical for me but I imagine a fix for this is fairly straightforward.
Awesome app, thanks a lot! Can you share a bit of the roadmap ahead?
Also, like others mentioned, not a big fan of the compose button. I also think the messages could use a bit less dark border.
@robertvhoesel thanks for your thoughts Robert. On the top of our list is better multiple accounts handling. We want it to be faster and smoother. Also, we're working on a dedicated compose window, better settings and many little things that will make the app much friendlier. Also, there will be 2 or 3 major features that we're not disclosing yet, but we're really excited about.
Are there advantages to Boxy over running Inbox through Mailplane with "Redirect Gmail to inbox.google.com" checked? Other than the $20 less it costs, I guess? --which is admittedly a pretty big advantage for people who don't already own Mailplane.
@chrisdolle we're committed to make Boxy the best way to use Inbox on the Mac, and not anything else. That also means that whatever changes Google makes to Inbox, we'll be there to quickly follow them and adjust consequently. Also, we're already working at different features that we think Inbox users are going to love. Hope this is enough, but Mailplane is certainly a great app and we think highly of their work!
A year ago I wrote about how to put Inbox for Gmail in your dock. I'm really happy that those instructions are now largely obsolete with the advent of Boxy. I've been using it for over a week now and really love it — I feel about as good about Boxy as I used to about Mailplane!
Just bought it and DAMN, this is so much faster than using the Inbox website.
Is there a way I can put a max width on the email container? Maybe there can be a setting in the future to add a gutter on the right and left side so there's some padding between the right edge of the app and the sidebar?
Current:
Sidebar | email-list |
Proposed:
Sidebar | email-list |
Love this!
@linuz90 Hey Fabrizio, sorry about that. I realized my comment didn't retain its formatting. Here's a quick mockup on the margining I think could be useful as a setting: http://c.areus.co/1hvC4/4FtdpGHH+
Just bought your product and I rarely buy apps for mac =D. Looking good so far.
I was "previously" using mailbox & ginbox (also a inbox wrapper, but open source), but your multiple account feature won me over.
My only request is for notifications to work similar to the Google Inbox app on iphone, it would be awesome if boxy could notify me when i have a new email in any of my accounts that I have logged into in Boxy, not only in the one that is currently open. (maybe it does and I just haven't noticed it working in time)
@mikecheung thanks Michael! Better notifications is on our list, and receiving notifications for every account would be awesome. Realistically, this is something that could make it to version 1.2 though, so you'll need to wait a bit
@mikecheung clicking the download button should open your default browser and start the download. We're working to integrate a downloader in the app itself.
