Apple considers collaboration with Google: Will Gemini AI save Siri?

Yes, we had this talk on Product Hunt countless times, about whether Apple is behind in AI.

Apple is in early talks with Google to potentially use Gemini AI to power a revamped version of Siri, as part of efforts to catch up in generative AI. They have been considering Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT + testing their own models.

It seems that collaboration with someone stronger in the AI field will be their salvation because Apple’s AI team faces talent losses, and the company is still behind AI rivals.

Which option (according to you) would be the best for Apple?

Going solo or teaming up? In case of teaming up – with whom?

I am kinda surprised they are considering Google because this one has always been their rival, e.g. in hardware devices or App Store vs. Play Store. I think that the most powerful combo would be Apple + GPT tho.

Gemini is actually performing quite well, their 2.5 Pro model is very capable. Since Apple isn’t primarily a data company, it makes sense for them to go with frontier models from other providers. If Apple were to run these models on their own servers, it would strengthen their product offerings, maintain user privacy, and give them time to develop and refine their own AI models for the future.

@ash_grover I am pretty curious whether they will be okay with some "revenue split" because they cut a huge piece from the pie – let's have a look at meta ads via Apple devices. Users overpay, and someone has to pay for that. 😅 I am afraid that when they jump on such a collab, it will increase the costs for users in such a way that it will be very unconvenient :D

@busmark_w_nika It should be okay, Google is more focused on capturing LLM market share at the moment. They were slightly behind in the LLM space, so they had to catchup a bit, and now they are almost there and this partnership with Apple gives them opportunity to close that gap.

Nika

@ash_grover If it is mutual, it makes sense. Tho I would be pretty curious how OpenAI would partner with Apple. Just think it would be a stronger combo.

@ash_grover I agree with you Ash! Very well said!

I think this will be a fantastic collaboration. I'm a big fan of Gemini myself - its advanced models and deep research capabilities are incredibly impressive.

We actually chose to integrate the Gemini API into our new product for that exact reason.

The power you get when you combine detailed prompts with its research features is a game-changer!

@tetianavoronina I thought that ChatGPT outperformed all other LLMs. Is Gemini really so cool? I have also heard that Perplexity's Comet is popular now.

@busmark_w_nika I tried working with Chat GPT, Gemini, and Grok.

Gemini Deep Research amazes me! It's perfect for market research - it saves a ton of time.

It's also great for SEO; the content structured by Gemini is easily seen by ChatGPT.

And it's really good for brainstorming. Especially for a non-technical founder, you have an idea and you're trying to figure out how technically difficult it is to implement.

As for the code.

It does UTM-links and schema markup tasks easily and efficiently, but I struggled and struggled with the timeline code for the website. It's probably better to use specialized solutions for writing code.

But in all other respects, I'm absolutely satisfied.

@tetianavoronina what do you think about Grok? I am using it and paying for that, but they still use the logo for image generation. 🥲

Tetiana Voronina

@busmark_w_nika I can't say much about Grok, as my experience is limited to using it for short blog posts announcements on X.

My real expertise is with Gemini. As an early user, I've had a front-row seat to its development, especially its 'Deep Research' feature, which is a game-changer for my work. I use it constantly when creating investor pitch decks, where I need to accurately research market trends, market sizing, and competitive landscapes.

Just a year ago, the process was fraught with risk. The tool would often provide links to non-existent studies, or the data would feel... well, made up. I had to double-check everything manually.

With the new Pro version, those issues are largely gone. The progress is obvious and the tool has become a stable and high-quality resource. The risk of incorporating its findings into an automated workflow is now low. In fact, I'm personally planning to integrate Gemini's Deep Research capabilities into one of my new products because of its proven reliability.

Gemini is great!! i'm starting to use it more frequently.

@jeffrey22 I only with "native search" on Google. Otherwise – nope – GPT is a leader in this.

Avery Tribbett

I think Apple does with AI exactly what they did with search. Pick the best one and partner to have it be the default option for Siri. This will allow them to focus on what they do best, which is hardware!

Nika

@averytribbett I do not know... but I would say that OpenAI is the top-notch in AI. Why do they consider Gemini then?
